Salary FAQ
How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week, then by weeks worked per year. A $32/hour job at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $32 × 40 × 52 = $66,560 a year. Two shortcuts if you work standard hours: hourly × 2,080 gives the annual figure, and roughly "double the hourly rate and add three zeros" — $32/hour is about $66,000.
Why does 2,080 hours matter?
2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks, the standard full-time year that US employers use for salaried and overtime calculations. If you work 40 hours a week but get paid vacation and holidays, your effective hourly rate is higher than the nominal rate, because you are paid for weeks you did not work.
What does "exempt" mean for overtime?
Exempt employees are not entitled to overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act; non-exempt employees must be paid 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Whether a role is exempt depends on duties and pay level, not on the job title an employer gives it.
How is take-home pay estimated here?
The estimate applies the 2024 US federal brackets, the standard deduction, and FICA (6.2% Social Security up to the wage base plus 1.45% Medicare), for a single filer with no dependents. It excludes state tax, city tax, 401(k) contributions and health premiums, so your actual deposit will usually be lower. Use it for comparison, not for filing.
Is a higher hourly rate always better?
Not if benefits differ. Paid time off, health insurance, retirement matching and commuting cost are all part of real compensation. A $30/hour role with five weeks paid leave and full health cover can beat a $34/hour contract role with neither — convert everything into an annual, all-in number before comparing.
