How it works
Sales tax is charged on a defined tax base, which is rarely the sticker price alone. Many jurisdictions also tax service fees, delivery charges and sometimes the tax itself. Rates are set at state, county and city level and stack, so the combined rate in an address can exceed the headline state rate. Taxing a tax, called tax on tax, varies by state and is why a price can jump more than expected at the till.
When to use it

Assumptions and limitations
Rates change with legislative sessions and economic conditions, so treat any figure as current rather than permanent. Exemptions exist for groceries, prescription drugs and clothing in many states. Marketplace facilitator laws mean some sellers collect the tax and others still expect you to declare it.

How do I calculate sales tax?
