🏷️ Discount Calculator
How much is 30% off? Enter the original price and discount — stacking an extra deal works too.
How to use the Discount Calculator
Work out the final price after a percentage discount, see how much you save, and compare stacked or successive discounts.
How it works
A discount applies to the original price: final = price × (1 − d). Successive discounts do not add up, so 20 percent off followed by another 20 percent off gives 36 percent off, not 40. Price increases and decreases have the same asymmetry: a 20 percent rise needs a 20 percent fall to undo it, giving 96 percent of the original.
When to use it
Use it when a sale looks better than it is, when comparing stacked promotions, or when working out whether a two-for-one deal beats a percentage discount.
Worked example
A $200 jacket at 30 percent off, then an extra 10 percent:
| Step | Calculation | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Original | — | $200.00 |
| 30% off | $200 × 0.70 | $140.00 |
| Extra 10% off | $140 × 0.90 | $126.00 |
| Total saving | — | $74.00 (37%) |
Assumptions and limitations
Reference prices are sometimes inflated so that a discount looks attractive. Also watch for exclusions, such as new arrivals or specific brands, and for membership prices that require a card or an annual fee that erodes the saving.
Discount FAQ
How do I calculate 30% off?
Multiply the price by 0.7 (100% − 30%). For a $249.99 item: $249.99 × 0.7 = $174.99. You save $75.00.
Does "30% off + extra 20%" equal 50% off?
No — the extra percentage applies to the already-reduced price. 30% off followed by 20% off equals a 44% total discount, not 50%. Use the "extra discount" field above to check any stack.
Is sales tax charged on the discounted price?
In most US states, yes — tax applies to the final checkout price after all discounts. Use our Sales Tax Calculator on top of the sale price for the exact total.
