🍽️ Tip Calculator

Work out the tip, the total and how much each person pays — in seconds.

How to use the Tip Calculator

Enter the bill, number of people and a tip percentage to see the tip, the total and what each person owes.

How it works

Tipping conventions differ by country and by venue. In the United States a tip of 15 to 20 percent on a restaurant bill is typical and the tip is often part of your compensation to a tipped worker; in much of Europe tips are not expected because service is included. Some cities and states calculate tips differently on the pre-tax versus post-tax amount, which changes the answer by a few percent.

When to use it

Use it to split a bill fairly, to check whether a suggested gratuity matches local norms, and to work out server tips when settling a bar tab.

Worked example

A $86.50 bill for 4 people at 18 percent:

ItemAmount
Bill$86.50
Tip (18%)$15.57
Total$102.07
Per person$25.52

Assumptions and limitations

Splitting can get awkward with cents. Decide in advance whether to divide evenly or round up. Tipping on the pre-tax amount versus post-tax changes the figure slightly. Not tipping or tipping below the customary rate has social consequences for tipped workers, though nothing legally obligates you to tip in most US venues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you tip in the US?

For sit-down restaurant service, 15–20% is standard and 20%+ signals great service. For bartenders, 15–20% of the bar tab or $1–2 per drink is common.

Should you tip on the pre-tax amount?

Custom is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. Enter the pre-tax amount above for the customary calculation.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage and set the number of people — the per-person amount is calculated automatically, tip included.
