✍️ Word Counter
Live word, character, sentence and paragraph counts — plus reading time. Your text never leaves your device.
How to use the Word Counter
Type or paste text to get live counts for words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time.
How it works
Counting conventions differ by tool and platform. English is usually counted by words split on whitespace; CJK text is usually counted by character, because whitespace carries no meaning. A mixed-language document therefore needs both figures, which is why this tool reports words and characters separately rather than picking one.
When to use it
Use it to check a submission against a word limit, to size meta descriptions, to estimate how long a read will take, or to check translation coverage.
Worked example
A 250-word paragraph:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Words | 250 |
| Characters incl. spaces | 1,512 |
| Characters excl. spaces | 1,310 |
| Sentences | 9 |
| Reading time at 240 wpm | about 1 minute |
Assumptions and limitations
Different editors and journals apply different counting rules, so compare like with like before concluding you are over or under. Reading time assumes average adult silent reading and excludes time spent interpreting tables or code. All processing happens in your browser and your text is never uploaded.
